In plain words. NRR is the Noise Reduction Rating printed on the package, in decibels, from a laboratory test the manufacturer has done under EPA rules. A higher number means more reduction in the test. OSHA, when it checks whether hearing protection is enough for a job, subtracts 7 from the NRR (for the way noise is measured) and may halve what is left to allow for real-world fit; so an NRR 33 plug is treated as about 13 dB of protection in that calculation. The types are corded and uncorded earplugs, banded earplugs, and earmuffs that go over the head or mount on a hard hat.

Technical. NRR per 40 CFR Part 211 Subpart B (EPA), tested to ANSI S3.19-1974; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 Appendix B derating (NRR minus 7, with a further 50% reduction applied by OSHA policy for engineering-control comparisons). CSA Z94.2 classes (A, B, C, with L for low-frequency) and EN 352 SNR values appear on dual-marked products. Values shown are the manufacturer's.

Ratings and specifications on this page are shown as published by the manufacturer or the named standard and describe performance in that standard's test. They are not a recommendation for any task. The employer's hazard assessment decides what protective equipment a job needs. Verify details against the manufacturer's current documentation before you buy.

OSHA method for comparing an NRR to a noise exposure
Step (29 CFR 1910.95 Appendix B)Example, NRR 33 earplug
Subtract 7 dB from the NRR (A-weighted measurement)33 − 7 = 26 dB
OSHA policy for engineering-control comparisons: reduce the result by 50%26 × 0.5 = 13 dB
Protection creditedAbout 13 dB in that calculation
