In plain words. Safety eyewear is marked by the manufacturer under ANSI/ISEA Z87.1. Z87 on the lens and frame means it passed the basic impact tests; Z87+ means it passed the high-impact tests (a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 feet per second for spectacles). Lens tint is about light, not impact: clear for indoors, gray or smoke for sun, indoor/outdoor and mirror tints for moving between the two, amber for low light. Anti-fog and hard (scratch-resistant) coatings are named by the manufacturer. Goggles add a seal around the eyes; face shields are worn over spectacles or goggles, not instead of them.

Technical. ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 (and the 2015 edition still on many labels) marks: Z87 basic impact, Z87+ high impact, D3 splash and droplet, D4 dust, D5 fine dust, W plus a shade number for welding filters, U plus a scale number for UV, L plus a number for visible-light filters, R for infrared, H for head sizes smaller than average. CSA Z94.3 is the Canadian equivalent, EN 166 the European mark (F, B, A for impact grades). Each mark shown on this page is the one the manufacturer publishes for that product.

Ratings and specifications on this page are shown as published by the manufacturer or the named standard and describe performance in that standard's test. They are not a recommendation for any task. The employer's hazard assessment decides what protective equipment a job needs. Verify details against the manufacturer's current documentation before you buy.
