In plain words. Hard hats are marked under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. Type I protects against a blow to the top of the head; Type II also protects against blows from the side, front and back. The electrical class is separate: Class G (general) is tested to 2,200 volts, Class E (electrical) to 20,000 volts, Class C (conductive) is not tested for electrical protection and may be vented. Bump caps are not hard hats; they protect against bumps and scrapes only. The manufacturer prints the Type and Class inside the shell.

Technical. ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2014 (R2019): Type I impact and penetration from above; Type II adds lateral impact (EN 12492 climbing-style helmets are tested similarly and are sold here where the manufacturer rates them to Z89.1 Type II); Class G 2,200 V, Class E 20,000 V, Class C no electrical rating; optional marks LT (low temperature, −30 °C), HV (high visibility), and the reverse-donning arrow. CSA Z94.1 is the Canadian equivalent. Suspension points, ratchet or pin-lock adjustment, brim style and vents are as published.

Ratings and specifications on this page are shown as published by the manufacturer or the named standard and describe performance in that standard's test. They are not a recommendation for any task. The employer's hazard assessment decides what protective equipment a job needs. Verify details against the manufacturer's current documentation before you buy.
