3M bayonet vs Secure Click: which facepieces, which cartridges, and what the 3M documents say changes
3M makes reusable facepieces on two cartridge connections that do not interchange. The bayonet connection is on the 6000 Series half and full facepieces, the 6500/6500QL, the 7500, the FF-400 and the 7800S, and takes the 6000 Series cartridges, the 60920 Series combinations, the 2000, 2200 and 7093 filters and the 5N11/5P71 pads with the 501 retainer. The Secure Click connection is on the HF-800 half facepiece and the FF-800 full facepiece and takes only the D-Series: D8000 cartridges, D3000 and D9000 filters and D7000 pads. The 3M catalog comparison lists the Secure Click facepieces with a speaking diaphragm and a seal check button, and does not mark them as compatible with 3M supplied air or PAPR systems; the bayonet 6000, 6500 (not QL), 7500, FF-400 and 7800S are marked for both. The protection codes are the same on both lines: D8001 is the Secure Click 6001, D80926 the Secure Click 60926, D3091 the Secure Click 2091.
3M Secure Click HF-800 Series Half Facepiece ReusableHF-800 Secure Click half facepiece with speaking diaphragm (3M technical data)Why the connection decides the cartridge. NIOSH approves a cartridge with the facepieces named on its approval label, and 3M's summary chart is split into two row groups, "Bayonet-style 3M Reusable Respirators" and "3M Secure Click Reusable Respirators", with no part in both. The HF-800 technical data states the HF-800 is NIOSH approved for use with D8000 Series cartridges, D3000 Series filters, D9000 Series hardcase filters and D7000 Series filters; the 6000 Series user instructions list the bayonet parts for the 6000 and 7500. The catalog comparison rows for the half facepieces read: platform HF-800SD Secure Click, 6000/6500/6500QL/7500 bayonet; speaking diaphragm HF-800SD yes, the bayonet half facepieces no; seal check button HF-800SD yes; supplied air and PAPR compatibility HF-800SD not marked. For the full facepieces: FF-800 Secure Click with Cool Flow valve, silicone faceseal, speaking diaphragm and seal check button, not marked for supplied air or PAPR; 6000, FF-400 and 7800S bayonet, marked for both.

The codes carry over one to one:
- D8001 = 6001 organic vapor; D8003 = 6003 OV/AG; D8006 = 6006 multi-gas (3M summary).
- D80921 = 60921 OV/P100; D80923 = 60923 OV/AG/P100; D80926 = 60926 multi-gas/P100.
- D3091 = 2091 P100; D3096 = 2096 P100 with nuisance acid gas relief; D3097 = 2097 P100 with nuisance OV relief; D3076HF = 2076HF P95/HF.
- D9093, D9093C, D9093CB = 7093, 7093C, 7093CB hard-case P100; D7N11 = 5N11 N95 pad; D7P71 = 5P71 P95 pad.
- One recorded disagreement: the HF-800 technical data states 40 hours of ozone use for the D3097 where the FF-800 user instructions and catalog state 8 hours; ozone is a 3M recommendation, not a NIOSH approval.
Questions people ask
Do Secure Click cartridges fit a 6000 or 7500 facepiece?
No. The 3M summary keeps the Secure Click D-Series and the bayonet parts in separate row groups, and the HF-800 technical data names only the D-Series for the HF-800.
Which 3M facepieces are Secure Click?
The HF-800 Series half facepiece (HF-801SD, HF-802SD, HF-803SD) and the FF-800 Series full facepiece (FF-801, FF-802, FF-803) (3M technical data; 3M.com).
What is the Secure Click equivalent of the 6001?
D8001 (organic vapor); of the 60926, D80926 (multi-gas/P100); of the 2091, D3091 (P100) (3M summary).
Can the HF-800 or FF-800 be used with supplied air or a PAPR?
The 3M catalog comparison does not mark either as compatible with 3M supplied air or PAPR systems; the bayonet 6000, 6500, 7500, FF-400 and 7800S are marked for both.
What does the seal check button do?
3M lists a seal check button on the HF-800 and FF-800 in the catalog comparison; the user seal check itself is the procedure in 29 CFR 1910.134 Appendix B-1 or the manufacturer's equivalent.
Is the D-Series approved for the same classes?
Each D-Series part carries the same NIOSH classes on the 3M summary as its bayonet counterpart; the approval numbers differ (CEL lines for the HF-800 and FF-800 with chemical cartridges and filters).
