The Draeger accuro pump: how it works, the leak check, strokes and the kits
The Draeger accuro is a manually operated bellows pump for short-term Draeger tubes: single-handed, 100 mL (± 5 %) per stroke, 1 to 50 strokes and higher, approx. 85 × 170 × 45 mm and 250 g, with no power supply and therefore no usage restriction in explosion-hazard areas. Pressing the bellows fully closed is one stroke; the air in the chamber leaves through the exhaust valve, and when the bellows are released the suction runs by itself, through the tube, until the bellows are fully open; a pressure-controlled end-of-stroke indicator in the pump head shows the stroke is complete (handbook pp. 29–30). The pump alone with tube opener is order number 6400000; the handbook lists the accuro set 6400260, the soft-side kit 8317186, the MDG kit 8318392 and the spare parts set 6400220 (p. 92).
Draeger accuro detector tube hand pumpBellows pump, 100 mL (± 5 %) per stroke, 1 to 50 strokes and higher, no power supply (handbook p. 31)Why does the handbook insist on the leak check? Because the scale on every tube assumes exactly the volume the pump draws. The handbook calls a check for leaks and suction capacity essential before every measurement, and shows it on the accuro: compress the pump with an unopened tube in place; after releasing it, the position of the bellows must not change for 15 minutes; after removing the tube, the bellows must open abruptly. After a measurement the pump is purged with a few empty strokes, without a tube, to clear reaction products that entered the bellows from the tube (p. 34).

Using it with the tubes, as the handbook describes
- Open both tube tips in the opener; the tube goes in with its arrow toward the pump (see the instructions for use packed with each tube).
- Pull the strokes printed on the tube next to its scale; wait for the end-of-stroke indicator before the next stroke (p. 30).
- Read the tube at once, in good light, against a white background, against an unused tube; read the whole stain (section 2.5).
- Tube and pump are matched at the factory and form a single unit; other pumps with Draeger tubes, or other tubes with the accuro, can impair the measurement (pp. 28–29).
- For sampling out of reach, the extension hoses of 1, 3, 10 and 15 m fit the accuro; 30 m only with the X-act 5000 (p. 48). Tubes with higher stroke counts take less time on the X-act 5000 because of its pump control (p. 30).

Questions people ask
How does the Draeger accuro pump work?
It is a bellows pump: pressing the bellows fully closed is one stroke of 100 mL; released, it draws the sample through the tube automatically until fully open, with an end-of-stroke indicator in the head (handbook pp. 29–30).
How do I leak-test the accuro?
Compress it with an unopened tube in place; after release the bellows must not move for 15 minutes; after removing the tube they must open abruptly (p. 34).
Does the accuro need batteries?
No. Power supply is listed as not required, so it has no usage restrictions in explosion-hazard areas (p. 30).
What is the difference between the accuro and the X-act 5000?
The accuro is a manual pump for small stroke numbers; the X-act 5000 Basic is an ex-protected automatic pump, 1 to 199 strokes, menu-controlled, for higher stroke numbers and sampling (pp. 30–33).
What are the accuro kit part numbers?
accuro with tube opener 6400000; accuro set 6400260; soft-side kit 8317186; MDG kit 8318392; spare parts set 6400220 (p. 92).
