Respirators for Asbestos
Asbestos fibers: the exposure limits, the OSHA and Cal/OSHA rule paragraphs as written, and the North and Dräger respirators, cartridges and filters whose own published data lists the hazard, with live prices. We sell nationwide; ships in 1–2 business days; most orders arrive in 3–7 business days.
The exposure limits
| Source | Limit |
|---|---|
| OSHA PEL, 29 CFR 1910.1001(c) and 1926.1101(c) | 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter as an 8-hour TWA; excursion limit 1.0 f/cc over 30 minutes |
| Cal/OSHA PEL, Title 8 §5208(c) and §1529 | 0.1 f/cc as an 8-hour TWA; excursion limit 1.0 f/cc over 30 minutes |
What the federal rule says
Each entry is condensed from the paragraph cited; the paragraph itself is the rule and the link opens it.
29 CFR 1910.1001(g)(3): Employers must select, and provide to employees, the appropriate respirators specified in paragraph (d)(3)(i)(A) of 29 CFR 1910.134; however, employers must not select or use filtering facepiece respirators for protection against asbestos fibers. Provide HEPA filters for powered and non-powered air-purifying respirators.
29 CFR 1910.1001(g)(2)(ii): Employers must provide an employee with a tight-fitting, powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR) instead of a negative pressure respirator selected according to paragraph (g)(3) of this standard when the employee chooses to use a PAPR and it provides adequate protection to the employee.
29 CFR 1926.1101(h)(1) (construction): Respirators must be used during Class I asbestos work; Class II asbestos work when ACM is not removed in a substantially intact state; Class II and III asbestos work that is not performed using wet methods; Class II and III work for which a negative-exposure assessment has not been conducted; Class III work when TSI or surfacing ACM or PACM is being disturbed; Class IV work within regulated areas where other employees are required to use respirators; work operations for which employees are exposed above the TWA or excursion limit; and emergencies.

California (Cal/OSHA)
Each entry is condensed from the paragraph cited; the paragraph itself is the rule and the link opens it.
Title 8 §5208 and §1529: California's asbestos standards carry the same PEL (0.1 f/cc TWA, 1.0 f/cc excursion) and refer respirator selection to Section 5144.

What the makers' data lists for asbestos fibers
Filtering facepiece (disposable) respirators are not permitted for asbestos under 29 CFR 1910.1001(g)(3)(i); the pages below list elastomeric and powered respirators with P100 (HEPA) filters only.

Respirators for Asbestos questions
Is an N95 mask enough for asbestos? No. 29 CFR 1910.1001(g)(3)(i) states employers must not select or use filtering facepiece respirators for protection against asbestos fibers, and HEPA filters are required on air-purifying respirators.
What is the asbestos PEL? 0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter as an 8-hour TWA and 1.0 f/cc as a 30-minute excursion limit (29 CFR 1910.1001(c); Cal/OSHA §5208(c)).
