Respirators for Abrasive Blasting
Abrasive blasting dust (silica sand, slag, toxic coatings): the exposure limits, the OSHA and Cal/OSHA rule paragraphs as written, and the North and Dräger respirators, cartridges and filters whose own published data lists the hazard, with live prices. We sell nationwide; ships in 1–2 business days; most orders arrive in 3–7 business days.
The exposure limits
| Source | Limit |
|---|---|
| 29 CFR 1926.1153 and 1910.1053 | Respirable crystalline silica 50 μg/m³ TWA; 1910.1053(f)(3) also applies 1910.94 (Ventilation) where silica-containing abrasives or substrates are blasted |
What the federal rule says
Each entry is condensed from the paragraph cited; the paragraph itself is the rule and the link opens it.
29 CFR 1910.94(a)(5)(i): Employers must use only respirators approved by NIOSH under 42 CFR part 84 to protect employees from dusts produced during abrasive-blasting operations.
29 CFR 1910.94(a)(5)(ii): Abrasive-blasting respirators shall be worn by all abrasive-blasting operators: when working inside of blast-cleaning rooms, or when using silica sand in manual blasting operations where the nozzle and blast are not physically separated from the operator in an exhaust ventilated enclosure, or where concentrations of toxic dust dispersed by the abrasive blasting may exceed the limits set in § 1910.1000 and the nozzle and blast are not physically separated from the operator in an exhaust-ventilated enclosure.
29 CFR 1910.94(a)(5)(iii): Properly fitted particulate-filter respirators, commonly referred to as dust-filter respirators, may be used for short, intermittent, or occasional dust exposures such as cleanup, dumping of dust collectors, or unloading shipments of sand at a receiving point when it is not feasible to control the dust by enclosure, exhaust ventilation, or other means. Dust-filter respirators shall not be used for continuous protection where silica sand is used as the blasting abrasive, or toxic materials are blasted.

What the makers' data lists for abrasive blasting dust
We do not list a NIOSH-approved abrasive-blasting respirator (Type CE) on this site. The North supplied-air components (ambient air pumps, hoses, couplers, CF-SAR assemblies, Primair hoods) and the P100 respirators below are the related items both makers publish; the rule paragraphs above say where each may be used.

Respirators for Abrasive Blasting questions
Can a dust-filter respirator be used for sandblasting? Only for short, intermittent or occasional exposures such as cleanup; 29 CFR 1910.94(a)(5)(iii)(b) states dust-filter respirators shall not be used for continuous protection where silica sand is the abrasive or toxic materials are blasted.
