Which HT Series unit fits the room
NFPA 10 (2026) 5.3.2.6.1 requires that portable extinguishers containing halogenated agents be placed in line with the minimum room volume warning on the nameplate. Multiply the room's length, width and height in feet to get its volume in cubic feet, then pick a unit whose minimum is at or below that number.
| Room volume | HT Series units Amerex lists for it | Example room |
|---|---|---|
| Under 427 cu ft | None in the HT Series | Closet-sized spaces |
| 427 to 895 cu ft | A537TS (2B:C) | A 10 x 10 ft room with a 9 ft ceiling (900 cu ft is just over) |
| 896 to 2,987 cu ft | 547 or 549 (5B:C), A537TS | A 12 x 15 ft room with a 10 ft ceiling (1,800 cu ft) |
| 2,988 cu ft and up | 551 (2A:10B:C), 547, 549, A537TS | A 20 x 15 ft room with a 10 ft ceiling (3,000 cu ft) |

Electronic equipment and energized electrical
NFPA 10 (2026) 5.5.4.6 directs that extinguishers protecting delicate electronic equipment be of a type listed and labeled for Class C, and that dry chemical extinguishers not be installed for that purpose. 6.4 requires Class C-rated units where energized electrical equipment can be encountered and sizes and locates them on the Class A or Class B hazard present. Amerex lists the HT Series for healthcare, clean manufacturing, data processing centers and museums.
Inspection and maintenance
Amerex states that stored-pressure Halotron BrX extinguishers do not require an internal examination of the cylinder or agent at annual maintenance, only a thorough external examination, and are replaced at 12 years from the date of manufacture on the nameplate. NFPA 10 (2026) does not require an annual internal examination for nonrechargeable extinguishers (7.3.3.6) and does not require a six-year internal examination or a hydrostatic test for them; they are removed from service no later than 12 years from the date of manufacture (7.3.6.3). Monthly inspection (7.2) and annual maintenance with a tag (7.3.1.1, 7.3.4) still apply, and the seal on a nonrechargeable unit is not removed (7.3.2.2.2). Check the code adopted by your authority having jurisdiction.
Amerex Halotron I units
Amerex also lists Halotron I (HCFC-123) units, which are rechargeable and carry a 6-year internal examination and a 12-year hydrostatic test under NFPA 10 (2026) Tables 7.3.3.1 and 8.3.1.

Amerex HT Series questions
What is the Amerex HT Series? Amerex's commercial line of Halotron BrX (2-BTP) clean agent portable extinguishers: Models 551 (12.5 lb, 2A:10B:C), 549 and 547 (3.75 lb, 5B:C) and A537TS (1.79 lb, 2B:C), listed to UL 2129 and UL 711, nonrechargeable with a 12-year service life.
Which HT Series unit has a Class A rating? Only the 551 (2A:10B:C). The 547, 549 and A537TS are B:C rated.
What is the minimum room volume for each HT Series unit? 551: 2,988 cubic feet; 547 and 549: 896 cubic feet; A537TS: 427 cubic feet, per Amerex. NFPA 10 (2026) 5.3.2.6.1 makes the nameplate minimum a placement requirement.
Do HT Series extinguishers need a six-year teardown or hydrostatic test? No. NFPA 10 (2026) 7.3.6.3 exempts nonrechargeable extinguishers from the six-year internal examination and hydrostatic test; they are removed from service at 12 years from the date of manufacture.
What is the difference between the 547 and the 549? Same agent, capacity and rating; the 547 discharges through a nozzle on the valve and the 549 through a hose and nozzle.
Does each unit ship with a bracket? Yes. The 551, 549 and 547 ship with a wall bracket; the A537TS ships with a vehicle bracket. Amerex sells the Model 809 vehicle bracket for the 551 separately.
