What does NFPA 10 cover? Selection, installation, inspection, maintenance, recharging and hydrostatic testing of portable fire extinguishers. The current edition is 2026.
Which extinguisher is right for electrical equipment? One listed for Class C. NFPA 10 (2026) 5.5.4.6 adds that units protecting delicate electronic equipment come from Class C-listed types and that dry chemical is not installed for that purpose.
How far apart do fire extinguishers have to be? Class A: within 75 ft of travel; Class B: within 30 or 50 ft depending on rating; Class K: within 30 ft (NFPA 10 6.2, 6.3, 6.6).
How often do fire extinguishers get inspected? Monthly after being placed in service, with annual maintenance by a qualified person (NFPA 10 7.2, 7.3).
Do fire extinguishers expire? Rechargeable units are maintained and tested on NFPA 10 intervals and can stay in service as long as they pass. Nonrechargeable units are removed from service no later than 12 years from the date of manufacture (7.3.6.3).
